Functional patterns 1:1 training
For the best results of our practice we recommend 1:1 training as a priority.
Our Process
We take a step by step approach, so no matter where you are in terms of fitness and mobility we will help you reach the next level on your path to better health and pain free living.
#1 - Initial consultation
Your journey with Functional Patterns Surf Coast begins with a thorough assessment of your relaxed posture and gait cycle (running/walking on a self propelled treadmill). Photos and slo motion video will be used for this assessment and provide a deeper insight into your biomechanical dysfunctions and gives us a clearer picture of where to begin addressing your issues.
This also serves as a point of reference for your trainer to track any progress in your posture and gait. Minimal gym clothing is required so that your trainer is able to clearly view and assess boney landmarks such as the knees, hips, spine, scapulae and ribcage.
The following steps may vary in order depending on your current physical state and ability.
#2 - myofascial release
This is where we will teach and guide you through the techniques of self myo-fascial release. Here we will utilise tools such as a lacrosse ball, pvc pipe or foam roller and other tools that can be used to facilitate the release of fascial adhesions, knotted muscles and dehydrated tissues.
Each of us throughout our lives have favoured a certain way of moving, be that throwing right handed or kicking right footed these movement preferences over time wire in kinetic biases. Effectively we have learned to rotate well one way and not the other. Coupled with injuries, chronic pain and genetic pre-dispositions this leaves us with dehydrated fascia (web like matrix of connective tissue) and “blockages” throughout, causing further asymmetries and movement limitations to compound.
Myofascial release is the first tool on the road to unwinding the spirals we have adapted to move with and find a more symmetrical and balanced structure.
#3 - Corrective exercises
The application of Functional Patterns IMAPS (Integrative Muscle Active Potential Sequences, a unique and exclusive system of corrective exercises developed by FP founder Naudi Aguilar) is what makes it the premier system on the planet for correcting biomechanics. This is usually seen as slow and controlled movements often using a cable machine for resistance. The intention to help the average person (or athletic person alike) to better understand the movement sequences found in the most elite athletes known today and in history. The best way to understand is to experience it for yourself , keeping in mind that a minimal movement base is required to coordinate the exercises effectively.
#4 - strength & movement
The end goal is efficient, pain free movement. Utilising FP dynamic and multi-planar movements with free weights, cables and body weight we will teach you how to move more efficiently. A defining characteristic of ageing or “getting old” is the loss of freedom of movement, this is not an event (aside from serious injury) but more-so a steady decline of our ability to move well. Most of us know this once we reach our mid 30’s and often feel we just can’t move and recover like we used to, niggles and pains become the norm. At Functional Patterns Surf Coast our goal is to not only put the breaks on this process but to reverse it and regenerate ourselves. Just as a car needs to be well oiled and all its parts moving seamlessly with each other, so too does the human body. Correct movement is nourishing.
