“I came across Functional Patterns while searching for something to help with my scoliosis. I have been aware of my scoliosis since I was a teenager and spent close to 20 years dancing, followed by weight training, and then a decade of yoga combined with weight-based strength training. By the age of 36, despite all of this, my body felt like it was breaking down. I was constantly in pain, caught in a cycle of training, flare-ups, and time off. I relied on monthly chiropractic visits and regular body treatments just to cope, and I realized this was not sustainable. I wanted to feel strong, mobile, and pain-free well into my 80s. When I started with Functional Patterns, I put a pause on yoga. Yoga had been a big part of my life. I even completed my 200-hour teacher training, as well as breathwork and meditation training, and felt that yoga deeply resonated with me. But as I progressed with Functional Patterns, I began to see that the stretching and movements I had been doing, especially with my scoliosis and hypermobility, were actually working against me rather than supporting me. Letting go of yoga was not easy, but I was committed to a pain-free life, so under Shane’s advice I let it go and fully committed to Functional Patterns. I knew I needed to break the cycle and change it up. Within weeks of training, my pain had significantly reduced. Six months on, it is pretty much gone. I have not needed a chiropractor since starting, and I feel like my relationship with exercise has completely transformed. I now understand how my body works and should work, and I can see real changes in my posture, movement, and even body shape. Beyond the physical, Functional Patterns has helped me stay more balanced and resilient in my nervous system during personal life challenges. Sessions with Shane are tough, but they are truly transformative. Living without pain and moving better than ever makes me excited for the years ahead on this journey. Shane’s attention to detail, patience, and commitment to each client is clear. He meets you where you are at and helps you progress, no matter your starting point. Looking back, I can see that I have spent my whole life not supporting my body to live well with scoliosis and build true strength. I only wish I had come across Functional Patterns sooner. It has also made me more conscious as a parent. In a world that defaults to exercise methods that promote flexibility above function, I want to guide my daughter differently, towards strength, resilience, and a body that will support her for life.”
